Excerpt:
What would it be like to have her that way? Skin to skin? Breathless and begging? My body inside hers? I want answers, I think as I open the door to our building. No, I need them. I take the elevator up to our floor and go right to her apartment. Using the key she gave me, I unlock her door, smiling that she still hasn’t changed the lock, and head inside. “Reid?” She jumps off the couch and I freeze. Jesus, she’s fucking beautiful. I’ve seen her a million times like this, but I don’t know what it is—I can’t breathe. Her hair is piled up on top of her head in some sort of nest, the glasses that she swears she doesn’t need are on, and her legs ... God, her legs. Long, sweet, slender … they would look perfect around my neck. “What are you doing here? If this is about …” She stops talking and looks at me, her eyes full of confusion as I watch her chest rise and fall. I walk toward her, unable to stand still. My hands grip her cheeks, and I pull her mouth to mine. Her gasp is swallowed by the searing kiss. Her fingers wrap around my wrists and I don’t know if she’s trying to stop me, but I’m going to keep going until she does. Yet she never does. Instead of pushing me away, her hands move to my hips. Willow kisses me back. She kisses me like this is the only option. She kisses me harder and more passionately than the last time. She gives as much as she takes and I fucking revel in it. This is crazy, but I don’t care. It’s right. It’s everything that finally makes sense. I wondered what it would be like and now I know—it’s fucking perfect. “Reid.” She says my name and then pulls my mouth back to hers. I kiss her, loving how our mouths fit and the way her tongue feels against mine. “Tell me to stop.” I give her an out that I pray she won’t take. “What?” “Tell me now, Wills.” I’m desperate for her. Seeing her tonight, knowing she was spying on me, did something to my heart that I can’t explain. It was the answer to the question that neither of us was willing to face. There’s something here. Maybe it’s new. Maybe it’s always been there but we didn’t see it. Maybe Willow and I needed to be pushed. Whatever the reason, the outcome is this. She touches my face. Her fingertips are soft, and she moves her thumb to my lip. “I can’t. I don’t know what’s happening, but I don’t want it to stop.” “Good, because I don’t think I could.” My mouth is back to hers the second the words are out. She giggles against my lips and I drink it in. Everything about Willow is sweet. Her mouth, her laughter, her heart. They all make her irresistible. I don’t know how I never saw it. I break the kiss and scoop her into my arms, bringing her back to the bedroom. She doesn’t say anything, and I’m glad for it. We’re both always in our heads and I’m very much ready to be in her instead. I lay her down and crawl over her, loving how she looks at me with lust-filled eyes. “Tell me what you want, Wills.” She shakes her head and I know what she’s doing, but I’m not having it. “Don’t think, baby, just tell me.” Her lids fall, closing me off to what she doesn’t want me to see, and I take a beat to really look at her. Lips swollen, shirt falling off her shoulder, hair fanning out on the bed. She looks like an angel. “I want you to kiss me,” she whispers.

After the Party by Cressida Connolly

Here is what it is about...

It is the summer of 1938 and Phyllis Forrester has returned to England after years abroad. Moving into her sister's grand country house, she soon finds herself entangled in a new world of idealistic beliefs and seemingly innocent friendships. Fevered talk of another war infiltrates their small, privileged circle, giving way to a thrilling solution: a great and charismatic leader, who will restore England to its former glory.

At a party hosted by her new friends, Phyllis lets down her guard for a single moment, with devastating consequences. Years later, Phyllis, alone and embittered, recounts the dramatic events which led to her imprisonment and changed the course of her life forever.

Here is what I thought...

This is a nicely written historical fiction novel about that in between era of the 1930's that we rarely hear about in books.  The story is told from Phyllis' point of view going back and forth in time from her release in prison and the time "before".
I found that I did not really care for any of the characters which makes it hard for me to enjoy a story as I have no one to root for. Phyllis seems overly naive and never seemed to ever learn her lesson.  This one is set in an interesting time with interesting themes but just fell flat for me.  2/5 stars

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

What I thought...

The only words I can think of to describe this book is: Holy sh*tballs!?
This story will take you on a crazy ride and drop you off the edge of a cliff. If you read this and you see that ending coming, then you are way smarter than me!
I love a good thriller and it has been a loooong time since I have read one that had me truly on the edge of my seat like this one did. Excellent first book by this author and I desperately hope he is busy writing another one!!!

I’m startled out of my thoughts when my brother jumps up and shouts a bunch of profane nonsense, hands flailing like he’s trying to swim on land, or approximate the chicken dance while on an LSD trip. “You can’t do this! It’s absolute bullshit!” Armstrong yells. I look around the table, trying to piece together what I missed. “I’m sorry, Armstrong. I know this is a shock, but we feel it’s in the company’s best interest to put Lincoln at the helm during this transitional stage,” G-mom says firmly. At the helm? I look to G-mom who’s busy not looking at me. Armstrong jabs at finger at himself. “But I’m the one who’s put in all the time here! I deserve to run the company! Lincoln doesn’t know the first thing about Moorehead. All he knows how to do is dig wells and forage for food in the wilderness. How are those valuable assets here?” He turns his attention to our mother. “Did you know about this? How can you let this happen? Look at him. How can that be the face of our company? He looks like he crawled out of a gutter and mugged a twenty-year-old college kid on a bender. How is this better for our bottom line?” My mother clasps her hands in front of her. “I’m sorry, Armstrong, but this decision wasn’t mine to make. I know this is hard for you, but your grandmother and fath—” Armstrong stomps his foot, exactly as a toddler would. “The company is mine! Lincoln can’t have it!” I raise a hand, half to quiet my brother and also to find out what the freaking deal is. “Whoa, let’s back this bus up. Can someone explain what’s going on?” “You’ve been appointed as the CEO of Moorehead Media, according to the will,” Christophe—no R, because that would make it far too pedestrian a name—my father’s lawyer says. I’m working on trying to remain calm as I address my grandmother. “You didn’t say anything about me being CEO. You said you needed my help.” “Running the company, yes,” she says through a practiced, stiff smile. It’s her warning face, but seriously, when she said she needed my help for a few months I figured it meant I’d be keeping Armstrong in line while she sorted out who was going to take over the company, which I realize now was a stupid assumption. “I didn’t think that meant CEO. How am I going to run a company with this dickhead on staff?” I motion to my brother. “The name calling is unnecessary,” G-mom replies. “Lincoln’s not even part of this family! He hasn’t attended one event in the past five years except for Dad’s funeral. He didn’t bother coming to my wedding and now he’s going to run the company? How is that fair?” I snort. “Your wedding was an expensive joke.” He crosses his arms over his chest. “I was set up. Amalie had cold feet and made me out to look like the bad guy.” The woman beside him shoots him disgusted look. Armstrong clears his throat and tugs at his collar. “My wedding is not the real issue. The point is that you’ve never involved yourself in any part of this family and now you think you can come in and take over. I will not stand by and let this happen!” He keeps jabbing his finger at me, as if he’s engaged in a finger sword fight. I lean back in my chair and lace my fingers behind my neck. Armstrong has always been reactive. And self-absorbed. For a while it seemed like he finally had it together—back when he was engaged. But ever since that fiasco of a wedding he seems to have come completely unglued. Again. But worse this time. “Someone needs a timeout.” ***Please not this is an unedited excerpt and is subject to change.***

Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal

What it is about...

A scandal and vicious rumor concerning the Binat family have destroyed their fortune and prospects for desirable marriages, but Alys, the second and most practical of the five Binat daughters, has found happiness teaching English literature to schoolgirls. Knowing that many of her students won’t make it to graduation before dropping out to marry and have children, Alys teaches them about Jane Austen and her other literary heroes and hopes to inspire the girls to dream of more.

When an invitation arrives to the biggest wedding their small town has seen in years, Mrs. Binat, certain that their luck is about to change, excitedly sets to work preparing her daughters to fish for rich, eligible bachelors. On the first night of the festivities, Alys’s lovely older sister, Jena, catches the eye of Fahad “Bungles” Bingla, the wildly successful—and single—entrepreneur. But Bungles’s friend Valentine Darsee is clearly unimpressed by the Binat family. Alys accidentally overhears his unflattering assessment of her and quickly dismisses him and his snobbish ways. As the days of lavish wedding parties unfold, the Binats wait breathlessly to see if Jena will land a proposal—and Alys begins to realize that Darsee’s brusque manner may be hiding a very different man from the one she saw at first glance.

What I thought...

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a girl can go from pauper to princess or princess to pauper in the mere seconds it takes for her to accept a proposal.”
Pakistan seems a perfect place to plop P & P characters into modern times as marrying well and having a family seems to still trump everything for women.  Alys is a good version of Elizabeth Bennett but wasn’t quite as witty and spunky to me.  Kamal got all the annoying secondary characters, namely Mrs. Binat and Lady (Mrs. Bennett and Lydia), perfect.
Overall, good adaptation but I did feel it was a bit slow moving in the middle and I was a little weirded out by the big time jump about a quarter into the book.  3.5/5

Only Love by Melanie Harlow

Only Love BTbanner.jpg

Heartfelt, beautiful and sexy!"

- Lauren Blakely, #1 New York Times bestselling author

Only Love AMAZON

A gorgeous former Marine with a tortured soul.
The beautiful, compassionate therapist living next door.
A meddlesome grandma determined to get them together.
I was expecting a proposal on my birthday, and I got dumped instead.
How could I have been so clueless?
Grams knew exactly how to distract me.
The “cute boy next door” who’s been helping her with yard work clearly needs a little therapy. Who better to call than her newly single therapist granddaughter?
She even fakes dementia to get me to visit, and now that I’m here she’s doing everything in her power to throw us together.
Not that I’m complaining. Ryan is the sexiest man I’ve ever met--I mean the full package, from the chiseled jaw to the massive shoulders to the rippling abs. (And yes, his package is full, and he knows exactly how to deliver it.) He makes me want to get out of my head and follow my heart. He makes me want to take chances I never thought I’d take.
He also makes me want to take my clothes off. A lot.
But he’s moody and challenging--one minute he’s an open book, and the next he’s completely closed off. He holds me like he’ll never let go, but insists he wants to be alone.
Some wounds are so deep, only love can heal them.
How can I convince him to let me try?

My Thoughts...

This is a quiet and heartfelt romance about a former Marine who is unable to fully process his emotions and a woman who wants love but is too scared to fully open up to anyone and be vulnerable.  Both main characters have similar issues with relationships but don't realize that they can help each other.
I really enjoyed this gentler love story from Melanie Harlow. It is not all high stress and high emotion but two people finding each other and dealing with their fears and insecurities.  Not all romance novels have to be soap opera level dramas to be good! MH knows how to make you love a character and identify with them.  She can also make you laugh especially when Stella's grandma, Grams, was involved.
The only complaint I can come up with is all of Gram's recipes and food talk made me hungry. I want those recipes! :)  4/5 stars

Excerpt:

“Ryan?” Startled, I turned around to find Stella standing a few feet away on the grass, wearing a T-shirt and pajama pants, arms crossed over her chest. Her feet were bare, and her hair was loose around her shoulders and a little messy, like she’d already been asleep. Thinking about her in bed did things to my insides. “Hey. Did I wake you?” “I was awake. My windows are open, and I heard something and thought I saw you through the window. What are you doing?” “Uh, building you a swing. But it was supposed to be a surprise.” Now that she’d caught me at it, I was kind of embarrassed. What if she thought this was stupid? “You built me a swing?” She came a little closer, and I realized she might not be able to see it in the dark. The moon was only a sliver tonight. “Yeah.” I grabbed one of the ropes. “Right here.” She stared at it. “Why?” “I’m not entirely sure.” Her eyes met mine, and my heart pumped harder. “Want to try it?” I asked. “Like right now?” I moved behind it and held both ropes steady. “Come sit.” She hesitated, and I thought maybe she was going to tell me to quit being weird and go home before she called the cops, but after a few silent seconds, she came toward me. Turned around. Lowered herself to the seat and closed her fingers around the ropes. “Well?” I asked. “How does it feel? Like you’re a kid again?” “This was very kind of you, but not necessary.” Her tone was stiffer than her posture. “Stella.” She didn’t answer. “I’m sorry.” “About what?” “Last night.” “You’re sorry about what we did?” “I think I’m more sorry about what we didn’t do.” Her head turned sharply, and she looked at me over one shoulder. “You sure know how to confuse a girl.” “One of my many talents.” She looked straight ahead again. “Tell me about some other ones. And give me a push.” I smiled, even though she couldn’t see it, and gave her a little nudge. “I’m fast.” “Oh really?” “Yeah.” I gave her a little harder push. “Track team in high school?” “Tried. Didn’t take.” “Why not?” “They expected me to show up for practice.” “Ah.” She straightened her legs and leaned back in the swing, her hair dangling behind her. “Tell me another one.” I gave her another push. “I’m good with my hands.” Her laugh floated back to me. “I have observed this about you already. Give me another one.” I pushed her again, just so I could feel her hair brush against my hands. “I’m not afraid of anything.” “No? Nothing?” “Nothing I can think of.” “Hmm.” “Are you analyzing me now?” “Kind of. I mean, you can’t say something like that to a therapist and expect her not to reflect on it a little bit, right?” “And?” “And what?” “Do you think I’m a liar or a fool?” “Neither,” she answered. “I think you mean what you say. I think you only lie when you have to, and even then, you hate it. And if I dug a little deeper—which I won’t, because my sisters have told me it’s annoying and intrusive—I think I might discover that it’s because above all, you value your honor. Your word.” For a moment, I was too stunned to think or move or speak. Then I said, “I take it back.” “Take what back?” “What I said. That I’m not afraid of anything.” “Oh? And what are you afraid of?” She swung back toward me and I caught her around the waist. Put my lips to her ear. “Your ability to read my mind.” Beneath my arms I could feel her chest expand and contract faster. “I’m sorry, Ryan. I know I shouldn’t say those—” “Come home with me,” I said, my voice raw with something like thirst. I pressed my lips to her throat and breathed in her scent. I let one hand move toward her breast. I waited for an elbow to the ribcage, a cry for help, a slap across the face. Because if she could read my mind right now, she’d know exactly what I wanted to do to her—and it was a long, detailed list. “Yes,” she whispered. “Yes.”
