My Thoughts:
Captain
Maya Stern has been through so much in the last several months; war, losing
fellow soldiers/friends in combat, her sister is murdered, and now she just
buried her husband. She has been
discharged from the service and is now teaching flying lessons and somehow has
to figure out how to raise her daughter on her own.
A dear
family friend gives her a nanny cam to help her feel at ease with her nanny
while she is gone and checking it one day after work changes everything. A man walks into the frame and sits down to
play with her young daughter, Lily. When
the man turns towards the camera Maya is shocked when she sees her supposedly
dead husband!
Once
again Mr. Coben gives you more twists and turns than you can possibly
imagine! Just when you think you know
“who dunit” something changes and your theories are totally thrown out the
window. Who can Maya trust? Her in-laws
are distant and strange, some friends are acting oddly, and new people keep
showing up with tons of secrets themselves.
Maya is,
at times, not relatable (for me) but considering what she has gone through it
would be hard for anyone to understand what she has experienced. This does not
detract from the story at all and adds to the experience. I cannot say much else without risking a
spoiler but if you love a good thriller with a strong female lead that keeps
you on your toes-this is it!
4/5 stars
If you enjoy a good thriller with a few giggles thrown in check out any of Mr. Coben's other books. My personal faves are the Myron Bolitar series and Six Years.
